01. Here

Here: The practice of invocation (becoming attentive to God’s call) and presentation (presenting ourselves to the Presence), awakening to the sacredness of this place, this moment, right here, right now.

  1. This song is built around the idea of the “here-ness” of God, embodied in the story of Jesus.

    Who was that?
    Is someone here?
    Am I alone, or?
I thought I heard someone call my name.
    Was it just my imagination?
Or was it someone’s real voice in my real imagination?
Could that be how you find me here, through my imagination?

    You are here.
    I am here.
    We are here, together,
    Making contact.
    Here and now.
    Not where I should be,
Not where I could or might be,
Not someday later or somewhere other,
But here, where I am, as I am,
Because I have always been in your presence,
Even though I didn’t realize it.

    Who’s here?
    Who are you?
    Who am I?
    Who are we together?

You are not what I think you are:
    You are always more –
    Greater, better, higher, deeper,
More wonderful than I can conceive.
    So here, now, I know:
The “I am” who you are
    Saturates and overflows
    My best thoughts of you.
    Somehow, let it be
To the real you, to the actual you,
To whom I here open the real me, my actual self.
Could I push through the veils and membranes,
    The fog and fences,
    To encounter, here,
The Vast You beyond the little concepts and words
That constitute the borders of my biggest understanding?

Even I am not what I think I am:
I do not even know myself.
How foolish for me to edit, preen,
    Camouflage, or masquerade, seeking to
    Enhance my image before you,
    You, seeing all altogether.
Here: I seek to bring the real, actual, factual me,
    All of me.
Good and bad (as I judge them),
Light and dark (as I see them),
Believing and doubting (as I understand each),
I present myself as I am (You alone fully know!).
I come here to where I have always been,
Awaken here to the Love that was already awake to me,
Into the real Presence of the real You, now and

    Here, in these unrepeatable circumstances.
Here, in these unique joys and sorrows,
Here in this gift of a moment of life,
    This breath,

    And this,

    And this.

    Here I am.
    Here you are.
    Here we are together,
    Living God.

Finished the “here” chapters tonight. I think that going back to a practice of reading 5 Psalms everyday will be refreshing in a new kind of way as I move into the practice of “Here”. Rock, Fortress, Mighty Tower, Shepherd, Ever Present Help. To think of God in these ways as well as the One who knows when I lose a hair or a sparrow falls was, I don’t know, centering, I guess. I will struggle with ways to express myself as I am experiencing God in new ways I suppose.
Thanks Brian for the courage to be who you are

I wast brought up with the idea of “the all seeing eye” waiting to zap me when I sinned. But practicing God’s presence and calling Him by the adjectives and names the psalmists used makes every moment that I recognize Him feel holy and beautiful, where thinking about it before might make me resent God for never giving me a moments peace. His presence is my peace.” He hides me beneath the shadow of His wings”

  4. My first “Here” exercise…(as a writer I find it helpful to write things as they come – so I created a private blog for me and Jesus)…This reveals that even after a couple of years of detoxing, I still have junk in my spirit. But it’s always good to bring it to Papa.

Here I am…With all my frustrations and things that muck up this space that I want to keep open for you…But you know I fear that because I have been told over and over again that to do that spells the end of me – that Helen as she is needs to be killed because she is imperfect and wrong, unworthy to exist. I know these are ‘old tapes’ but they resurface when I am asked to present myself ‘naked’ to You…And it scares me…I don’t mean to be selfish…I know what it is to walk with that space open and have You flow from me…I know that I don’t really lose me, but find the person that you made me to be, the one that lies so perfectly ready behind this veil of fear…I know you tell me to fear not. But I am still scared. I trust that you love me right here and now. Thank you. Thank you for always letting me be where I am, for your gentle leading and calling to this place. For your eternal patience….Help me move past these barriers into your joy….

    I am here
    Alone in the darkness
    Filled with light

    I am here
    Ready and waiting
    Eagerly listening

    I am here
    Open and accepting
    Grateful for all

    I am here
My God of strength and hope
    Here I am

Stand still. The trees ahead and bushes beside you
Are not lost. Wherever you are is called Here,
And you must treat it as a powerful stranger,
Must ask permission to know it and be known.
The forest breathes. Listen. It answers,
I have made this place around you,
If you leave it you may come back again, saying Here.
No two trees are the same to Raven.
No two branches are the same to Wren.
If what a tree or a bush does is lost on you,
You are surely lost. Stand still. The forest knows
Where you are. You must let it find you.
